Ken Heyman plein air paintings
I relish the pleasure of painting. I prefer plein air painting, the act of painting outdoors, a method which contrasts with studio painting, for the simple purity of the experience. Working directly on site in nature to capture the essence of the landscape forces spontaneity into the process; including the changing sun, wind, and weather. I layer the color on thickly with a palette knife or big brush, focusing my attention to the elements of color theory and composition. I like to work fast, and transfer this physical energy to the canvas with visible brush strokes and motion. I may consume a dozen brushes during the painting. I also use industrial tools such as cement trowels, blocks, sand paper, and other objects to apply, scratch, remove and move paint. The landscape is my initial inspiration for the work, but the painting will take on its own evolution. I paint the same locations over time and seasons. Each new painting reflects changes in light, temperature, time, scenery, and my connection to the landscape.
